Choose a region, then slow the day down.

A good winery day starts with a small shortlist. Choose one region, book the tastings or lunch you want and leave time between stops. Each of these regions also offers villages, food and scenery, so a wine-country outing can work for the whole group.

If you are caravanning, book a suitable base and leave the van there while exploring. Narrow entrances and busy cellar-door car parks can be awkward with a trailer. Arrange a designated driver or local transport before any tasting.

Adelaide Hills wineries

Village stops and a cooler-climate tasting day

The Adelaide Hills brings together cellar doors and leafy country towns. It is a good choice for a relaxed outing that mixes a tasting with a village wander, a lunch booking or a scenic drive.

Explore styles such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine. The regional cellar-door directory includes Shaw + Smith, Bird in Hand and Sidewood, among many other options to research.

A day trip or a caravan stay?

For a day trip, keep the stops in a small area rather than criss-crossing the Hills. Check road access and park the caravan at your base before tackling smaller lanes.

For a longer stay, use our parks and camping guide to compare options around Hahndorf and the foothills. Confirm site sizes and access directly with the park.

02

Barossa Valley wineries

Heritage estates, cellar doors and village life

The Barossa is a natural fit for a wine-country weekend. Make time for the villages around Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston, alongside cellar-door visits and local food.

Shiraz is a useful starting point, but the region’s wineries offer a much broader range. For an introductory itinerary, our existing guide includes Jacob’s Creek, Seppeltsfield and Yalumba alongside lookouts and village stops.

Make a weekend of it

Choose a caravan base first, then divide the valley into manageable outings. A booked lunch and one or two cellar doors can make a more enjoyable day than a long list of rushed stops.

Read our five Barossa stops for a day trip or caravan stay for a practical starting route and places to investigate for an overnight stay.

03

McLaren Vale wineries

Wine country with the coast close by

McLaren Vale combines vineyards, cellar doors, food and the southern coastline. It suits travellers who want a winery day followed by beach time, rather than choosing between the two.

Research cellar doors such as d’Arenberg, Wirra Wirra and Coriole, or use the regional guide to find smaller producers. Shiraz and Grenache are among the styles you will encounter; let your interests shape the shortlist.

Pair it with Aldinga Beach

For a short break, plan one day around McLaren Vale and another around Aldinga Beach or the southern coast. Keep winery visits separate from towing days, and confirm cellar-door bookings before setting out.

See the southern beaches and Fleurieu section for Aldinga Beach, Victor Harbor, Port Elliot and Goolwa ideas, or follow our three-day Fleurieu caravan loop.

Before you visit a cellar door

  • Check opening days, tasting fees and booking requirements with the venue.
  • Ask about food, accessibility, children and pets if those affect your plans.
  • Confirm large-vehicle parking directly rather than assuming an estate has room for a caravan.
  • Choose a driver or book transport before tasting, and allow time for a relaxed lunch.
