From Glenelg, West Lakes and Semaphore to Aldinga Beach, Victor Harbor and Goolwa: find your next beach day, lakeside pause or Fleurieu Peninsula caravan escape.
A coastal Adelaide holiday works well with a booked caravan site as your base and smaller outings in the tow vehicle. That gives you more flexibility for town-centre parking, lunch stops and a walk by the water. Build your plans around the place you most want to explore, rather than towing between each beach.
For Glenelg, compare caravan accommodation at West Beach. For the northern stretch around Semaphore and West Lakes, consider Semaphore Park. Both bases appear in our caravan parks near Adelaide guide.
Adelaide’s western beaches
Stay close to the city with beach days around Glenelg and Semaphore, plus a lakeside outing at West Lakes.
01 · Beach & town
Glenelg
Make Glenelg your stop for the jetty, foreshore and a wander along Jetty Road. It suits a day when you want to mix beach time with cafes and shops, rather than spend the whole outing in the car.
Caravan planning: Look at a booked site in nearby West Beach, then leave the van at the park while you explore Glenelg. Check parking signs and height limits before choosing a town-centre car park.
West Lakes offers a change of pace from the sand: plan a lakeside stroll, a picnic break or time around the waterfront. It is a lakeside destination near the beaches, rather than an ocean beach in its own right.
Caravan planning: Visit from your booked coastal accommodation and check access and parking before arrival. For water activities, read the council’s current advice, particularly after rain, and check designated fishing areas.
Semaphore pairs a sandy beach and foreshore with cafes and local shops. Give it an unhurried afternoon: a walk, something to eat and time by the sea are enough to make it a worthwhile stop.
Caravan planning: Compare accommodation in Semaphore Park as a base for the northern coastline and nearby West Lakes. Confirm the park address and your site requirements when booking.
Head beyond Adelaide’s suburban beaches for a different kind of coastal break. Aldinga Beach pairs naturally with McLaren Vale, while Victor Harbor, Port Elliot and Goolwa suit a longer Fleurieu Peninsula stay. Choose a base for the area you want to explore rather than trying to cover the entire coast in one day.
01 · Southern shoreline
Aldinga Beach
A long sandy shoreline and coastal scenery make Aldinga Beach a rewarding place to slow down. Plan a beach walk or time by the water, then make a separate outing into nearby McLaren Vale wine country.
With the caravan: Check authorised accommodation and access with the operator before booking. Leave the van at your base for the beach outing, and check signs and conditions before using any beach vehicle access.
Make Victor Harbor a base for foreshore wandering, cafes and the southern coastline. Add nearby Port Elliot for a village stop and time around Horseshoe Bay, or investigate the heritage Cockle Train for a different way to explore.
With the caravan: Our parks and camping shortlist includes Victor Harbor and Port Elliot options. Check site dimensions and current facilities, then explore the towns without towing.
Goolwa brings together riverfront heritage and a coastal outing. Spend time around the Wharf Precinct, explore the town’s places to eat or plan a separate trip to Goolwa Beach. It also works well with a Port Elliot or Victor Harbor stay.
With the caravan: Arrange an authorised park or campground first. Confirm beach access conditions and local rules; a parking area or a route onto the sand is not automatically a place to camp.
A short break: Choose Aldinga Beach and McLaren Vale wineries for a coast-and-vineyards combination. Keep tasting plans separate from towing, and organise a driver or transport.
A longer stay: Base yourself around Victor Harbor, Port Elliot or Goolwa and give each town its own outing. Our three-day Fleurieu caravan loop offers a starting plan.
Port Noarlunga, Sellicks Beach and the coast around Normanville are other places to research if you have more time. Choose activities around the weather, check swimming conditions and allow for slower travel when towing.

A relaxed coastal weekend
Day one: Set up at your booked park, then head to Glenelg for a foreshore walk and a meal. Keep the first day simple so you have time to settle in.
Day two: Combine a West Lakes outing with an afternoon at Semaphore. Choose activities around the weather and your group’s interests; there is no need to cover every stop in one day.
Where should I look for caravan parks near Glenelg?
West Beach is a useful nearby starting point. Check the park’s exact address, site dimensions and booking conditions, then plan Glenelg as an outing from your base.
Can I combine West Lakes and Semaphore?
They work as separate stops on a northern coastal outing. Leave the caravan at your booked site and choose parking suitable for your vehicle at each destination.
Can I stay overnight in a beach car park?
Do not assume day parking permits overnight camping. Use an authorised park or campground and follow the signs and local rules at each location.
